Accused shoplifter taken into custody after struggle

BATAVIA – A man suspected of stealing merchandise from a department store was taken into custody by store staff after a brief struggle, according to the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office.

Jeremy J. Barnett, 24, of Rochester, was arrested Sunday afternoon, after he allegedly concealed merchandise alarm tags with covers and left the Marshalls store on Veterans Memorial Drive, deputies said. He was taken into custody by store staff.

Barnett was charged with a felony count of grand larceny, misdemeanor counts of possession of burglar tools and conspiracy, and a violation count of harassment.

Following arraignment in Batavia Town Court, Barnett was sent to the county jail in lieu of $10,000 bail.
