Water hazard proves costly for Miller

Jamie Miller of Wanakah Country Club fell short in his effort to defend his title at the New York State Mid-Amateur golf championship, at Wolferts Roose Country Club in Albany.

Miller was tied for the lead with Luke Hobika through 13 holes of the final round. Then Miller found a water hazard on an approach shot on No. 14, while Hobika recorded a birdie. Miller hit a shot out of bounds later in the round. He eventually finished in a tie for sixth place at 216, 6-over par.

Hobika had a 71 Sunday to finish at 212. His first championship in the event came in 1998. Matt Clarke, Adam Condello and Tim Spitz tied for second at 214.

Ryan Spady of the River Oaks GC finished in a tie for eighth at 219.
