Canada wins lax title

Team Canada still has never lost a game in the World Indoor Lacrosse Championships. The squad defeated the Iroquois Nationals, 12-8, in Sunday’s championship game that took place the Carrier Dome in Syracuse.

Four members of the Buffalo Bandits won gold medals. Dhane Smith had a goal and an assist, Steve Priolo had a goal, while Billy Dee Smith and Ryan Benesch (who did not play Sunday) also were on Canada’s roster. Curtis Dickson led Team Canada with four goals and an assist.

For Iroquois, Jerome Thompson (one goal) and Brandon Goodwin of the Bandits were on the roster and earned silver medals.

The United States beat Israel, 15-4, to win the bronze medal. Local products Joe Resetarits (two goals and four assists) and Joe Smith played for Team USA, while Chad Culp of the Bandits played for Israel (two assists).

The announced attendance for the championship game was 10,421. That’s the largest crowd in tournament history; the old record was given as 8,000.
