Red Mass to be offered Thursday in St. Joseph Cathedral

Bishop Richard J. Malone will celebrate the Red Mass, a special service for judges, lawyers and public officials of all faiths and their staff, at 12:05 p.m. Thursday in St. Joseph Cathedral, 50 Franklin St.

All are invited to attend. Judge Frank Caruso of the 8th Judicial District will offer remarks at the close of the Mass.

A Buffalo tradition, the Red Mass is sponsored by St. Thomas More Guild, an organization for Catholic lawyers in the Diocese of Buffalo.

The Mass dates back to the 13th century, when it officially opened court sessions in most European countries. Referring to the red vestments worn by celebrants, the Mass was offered each fall to invoke divine guidance and strength for those in the legal and judicial system.
