Loan, job offer scam artist gets 18 months in federal prison

John Northrup advertised loans and employment opportunities on Craigslist and Backpage and charged a onetime fee to people seeking the information.

Turns out it was all a scam and Northrup, 37, of Buffalo was sentenced Thursday by U.S. District Judge William M. Skretny to 18 months in prison. Defense attorney John J. Molloy said Northrup, who previoulsy pleaded guilty to wire fraud, always thought he would be caught but continued his wrongdoing because of the money it generated.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Scott S. Allen reminded Skretny of Northrup’s extensive record, including 10 previous convictions, and that he cheated 292 people out of $65,000 in cash.
