Chaz Bundick, aka Toro y Moi, is a tough artist to pin down, and he seems to like it that way. Though he earned himself the loyalty of sizable underground audience based on a series of synth-based releases that, apparently, needed to be referred to as “Chill Wave,” by folks who just can’t seem to enjoy music unless it has been given a genre classification, Bundick threw a monkey wrench into the works with the early summer release of “What For?”
For this spectacular album – one of the finest pop records of 2015, surely – Bundick pushed the synths to the side and instead indulged in a rendering of luxurious ’70s-styled power-pop and AM Gold-styled pop nuggets. Sure, it’s still chilled-out stuff, but Toro y Moi fans might not be as in love with the likes of XTC, Todd Rundgren and Badfinger as Bundick himself so clearly is. Toro y Moi keeps on moving, however, dropping singles on the market whenever the mood takes him, and carrying on the “What For?” tour, which will include a stop at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Waiting Room (334 Delaware Ave.). Astronauts and ETC will open the 16-and-over show. Tickets are $20 (Ticketfly.com).
