LOCKPORT – Niagara County residents who want to raise chickens in their backyards are being offered instruction by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Niagara County.
The agency warned would-be chicken farmers, however, to check with their local government to see if there are laws restricting chickens in residential areas. If the coast is clear, those who want to enter the chicken field may sign up for Backyard Chicken Basics, being offered from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 1, and the more advanced Backyard Chicken Keeping, at the same times Oct. 15.
The classes cost $10 each or $15 for both, and will be taught by Amanda Henning of Cooperative Extension. The location is the 4-H Training Center on the County Fairgrounds, 4487 Lake Ave., Lockport. Registration is available by calling 433-8839, extension 221.
