Daemen’s new academic and wellness center opens in old Main St. YMCA branch

Daemen College in Amherst has opened a $5.6 million Academic and Wellness Center inside a former branch of YMCA Buffalo Niagara. The refurbished two-story center houses classrooms and lab areas for the college’s physical therapy, athletic training and health care studies programs. The space includes a multipurpose room in the physical therapy lecture hall for either traditional lectures or for collaborative small group learning opportunities.

The building is located at 4433 Main St., across the street from the main campus. It also houses student lounges, faculty offices and a renovated 2,400-square-foot fitness center. The college bought the building from the YMCA in 2013 for $583,500. The YMCA opened a new facility, the Independent Health Family Branch, a few miles east on Tech Drive, adjacent to the Erie Community College North Campus.
