The University at Buffalo will unveil new white helmets for Saturday’s game against Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton, Fla.
The Bulls haven’t worn white helmets since the 2001 season. They’ve worn blue since, although they added a black alternate helmet last season. UB was not saying what decal will appear on the side of the helmet. It’s expected to be 87 degrees at game-time Saturday.
Asked if the impetus for the helmet was fashion-related or to help deal with the Florida heat, UB coach Lance Leipold said: “A little of both. We were going to try to do something, and we started thinking this would be the perfect time with the heat to bring them out.”
Leipold confirmed that junior defensive end Torey Hendrick, a junior college recruit, will sit out this season for academic reasons. Hendrick is practicing with the team and attending classes. He was a three-star, edge-rushing recruit from New Jersey who spent the past two seasons at ASA College in Brooklyn. He had signed with Iowa in 2014 but needed to spend a second year at junior college. He will have one year of eligibility remaining next season.
Saturday’s game will be shown locally on WNYO, Channel 49.
