Tonawanda woman succeeds in court-supervised drug rehab

LOCKPORT – Rebecca L. Szumigala, 22, of William Street, City of Tonawanda, was granted a one-year conditional discharge Thursday by Niagara County Judge Matthew J. Murphy III after she successfully completed the judicial diversion program of court-supervised drug treatment.

Szumigala had pleaded guilty in January 2014 to having 60 small bags of cocaine in the glove compartment of her vehicle when North Tonawanda police stopped the auto.

In another drug case before Murphy Thursday, Jacob Briones, 23, of 15th Street, Niagara Falls, pleaded guilty to fifth-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance and was scheduled for sentencing Nov. 12. Briones sold cocaine to a police informant in the Falls three times in November and December 2013.
