Depew man arrested for three bank robberies in last two weeks

A 46-year-old Depew man was arrested near the Broadway Market on Thursday and charged with three bank robberies in Cheektowaga and West Seneca in the last two weeks. Thomas Blachowski was arrested after a short foot chase along Broadway and he was subdued after a brief struggle, according to West Seneca Detective Captain Patrick A. Shea.

Pending Cheektowaga Town Court proceedings Blachowski is being held in Cheektowaga Police custody on three counts of first-degree robbery.

Detectives from both the Cheektowaga and West Seneca police departments followed up various leads as part of a joint task force set up in the bank cases and identified Blachowski as the suspect in each of the three robberies, Shea said. Detectives sped to the Broadway Market area Thursday after being alerted to the suspect being spotted near that business, which also contains a bank branch.

Blachowski is charged with the robbery of the M&T Bank branch at 900 Thruway Drive in Cheektowaga on Sept. 3, the robbery of the First Niagara Bank branch at 1675 Walden Avenue in Cheektowaga Friday and Tuesday’s robbery of the M&T Bank branch on Slade Avenue in West Seneca.
