Then and now: This is it, the start of the 10-race Chase for the Sprint Cup. A field of 16 begins a quest where four drivers will be eliminated after each of the first three elimination rounds (every third race), leaving four finalists in the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway in mid-November. ... This will be the 15th Sprint Cup race at Chicagoland Speedway, which held its first NASCAR race in 2001. ... Brad Keselowski is the defending race winner and has won two of the last three Chase openers at Chicagoland. After winning the race in 2012, Keselowski went on to win the championship. ... Matt Kenseth won the last Chase qualifying race this past Saturday at Richmond. It was Kenseth’s fourth win of the season, putting him into a tie with Jimmie Johnson and Kyle Busch for the top seed in the Chase. Kenseth is seeking his second career Cup championship, having won his first back in 2003. ... Five drivers enter the Chase still without having a win in 2015: Jamie McMurray, Jeff Gordon, Ryan Newman, Paul Menard and Clint Bowyer.


Event: Furious 7 300, Chicagoland Speedway.

TV: 6 p.m. Saturday, NBCSN.

Then And Now: This will be the 20th Xfinity Series race held at Chicagoland Speedway. Erik Jones won on June 21, while Sprint Cup regular Kevin Harvick won this race last September. ... There have been different winners in each of the last nine Xfinity races at Chicagoland. Harvick and Kyle Busch each have three Xfinity wins at the 1.5-mile oval. ... Defending Xfinity Series champion Chase Elliott finally broke through for his first win of the 2015 season, reaching Victory Lane last Friday at Richmond. ... Even though Elliott won at Richmond, Chris Buescher remains the Xfinity Series points leader, holding a 21-point edge over Elliott and a 27-point margin over third-ranked Ty Dillon.

Camping World Truck

Event: American Ethanol E15 225, Chicagoland Speedway.

TV: 8:30 p.m. Friday, Fox Sports 1.

Then and now: This will be the seventh Truck series race at Chicagoland. Kyle Busch has won the last two ... Erik Jones outdrove veterans Alex Tagliani and Matt Crafton on Aug. 30 to capture the most recent Truck race, the Chevrolet Silverado 250 at the twisting Canadian Tire Motorsport Park road course circuit in Bowmanville, Ont. That win vaulted Jones into first place in the Truck point standings. Two-time and defending Truck Series champ Matt Crafton is in second place (three points back), while Tyler Reddick dropped to third place (15 points behind Jones).


Event: NHRA Carolina Nationals, Sept. 18-20, at zMAX Dragway in Concord, N.C.

TV: 1:30-3:30 a.m. Sunday, ESPN2, (repeated 7-8 a.m.) . Eliminations from 12-6 p.m., and again from 8:30-11:30 p.m., ESPN2.

Then and now: The NHRA begins its six-race playoff series known as the Countdown to the Championship. ... Points leaders in all four pro classes heading into the Countdown: Top Fuel: Tony Schumacher plus-30 over Brown, plus-40 over Richie Crampton, plus-50 over Larry Dixon. ... Funny Car: Beckman plus-30 over defending series champ Matt Hagan, plus-40 over Tommy Johnson Jr., plus-50 over Del Worsham. ... Pro Stock: Defending series champ Erica Edwards plus-30 over Greg Anderson, plus-40 over Chris McGaha and plus-50-over Jason Line. ...
