Softball tournament to raise money for Butterfly Foundation

More than $170,000 has been raised for the foundation formed to create Butterfly Athletic Park at Wales Primary School, and there is another event this weekend.

The foundation and park are in memory of 9-year-old Katie Durkin, who died July 7 from injuries suffered in a car crash.

The Butterfly Foundation is raising money for the park and future endeavors. The KATIE logo is the acronym for “Kind and Thoughtful in Everything,” with those words surrounding a drawing of a butterfly that Katie created.

Money has been raised through donations, the sale of KATIE inspirational items at Aurora Outfitters, as well as other fund raising events.

The latest is a the Butterfly Memorial Softball tournament, organized by the Nuwer family, to be conducted Saturday and Sunday at the EMW fields on Creek Road in Elma. The kickoff event is at 7 p.m. Friday at O’Brien’s Sleepy Hollow, 751 Ostrander Road, East Aurora.

Katie, who was active in sports, was a minor league player in EMW’s softball division.
