The Mid-American Conference is coming off a big football weekend, after victories over Southeastern Conference and Big 10 Conference teams.
Toledo, arguably the preseason favorite to win the MAC, scored a 16-12 win at Arkansas of the SEC. Bowling Green, favorite to win the MAC West again, routed Maryland, 48-27, for a road win at a Big 10 school.
But there also were two other good wins. MAC bottom-feeder Eastern Michigan won at Wyoming, 48-29. Wyoming is a lower-ranked Mountain West team. But the Mountain West usually has dominated the MAC in recent years. And Ohio scored a 21-10 win at home against Marshall. Marshall is picked to win Conference USA.
MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher on the EMU and Ohio wins:
"They both go a long way to getting us where we want to be, and that’s to be the highest ranked of the Group of Five, as well as to have the highest ranked champion of the Group of Five. So when we match up with our peer group, the other Group of Five conferences, those are obviously games that we point to and say those direct-comparison games are awfully important."
For the record, the Group of Five is the FBS conferences outside of the Power Five. They are the Mountain West, the American Athletic Conference, the MAC, Conference USA and the Sun Belt Conference.
