Rapaport closes Buffalo's original online restaurant guide

Bill Rapaport, whose website was the first reader-driven Buffalo restaurant review site, has announced its closing.

Rapaport, a former University at Buffalo professor of computer science, explained in a site posting that he's retired and moved out of Buffalo, "and now have other obligations to fulfill.

Over the years, hundreds of readers contributed more than a thousand reviews of hundreds of restaurants in Western New York and southern Ontario.

"I began it in 1988—long before the Web was a glimmer in anyone's eye—as a 2-page handout for an international conference that I hosted at UB," Rapaport wrote. "I am gratified that it has grown to have a loyal following and many reviewers. But I have retired from UB, moved out of Buffalo, and now have other obligations to fulfill."

The site will remain for now, he wrote. "The guide will remain accessible on the Web unless its host, the UB Department of Computer Science & Engineering, decides otherwise."
