Letter: Why do banks charge these ridiculous fees?

Why do banks charge these ridiculous fees?

How can a bank with a clear conscience charge a customer a fee for overdrawing an account by less than a dollar? A recent miscalculation on my part caused my balance to be short by less than a dollar and what did the bank do to help the situation? It merely charged my account $35. When I expressed my concern with this fee, I was given a line about the amount of the item that caused the overdraft. If the amount had been less than $5, the bank wouldn’t have charged a fee, but since it was over that amount, it feels justified with charging this ridiculous fee. If this isn’t an example of corporate greed, I certainly don’t know what is.
