Doug Hanzel turned a lead into a runaway in capturing the Senior Porter Cup at Niagara Falls Country Club on Friday. And he set a record in the process.
Hanzel, who led by three shots after the second round, fired a 70 in the final 18 holes of the 54-hole competition. He is from Savannah, Ga., and is a former U.S. Senior Amateur champion. His 204 total, 6-under par, broke the tournament record by four strokes. The Senior Porter Cup is contested by players 55 and over.
Chris Kertsos of Pickering, Ont., couldn’t keep up with Hanzel, who had four straight birdies in the middle of his round to pull away. Kertos had a 73 to finish at 210 for the competition.
Meanwhile, Mickey Jones of Odessa, Texas, won the Super Seniors competition, which goes to those 65 and older. His 215 total for three rounds gave him a three-shot victory over Mike Rice and Berger Warner.
