LOCKPORT – The city and the state Canal Corp. announced Wednesday that the second annual “Locktoberfest,” an event celebrating the Flight of Five, Lockport’s original Erie Canal locks, is scheduled for Sept. 26.
The event will feature an expanded version of the weekly Community Market, which will include craft beer and wine tastings, Flight of Five locks demonstrations, entertainment, and children’s activities.
Locktoberfest will recognize the many volunteer lock tenders who offered their time to put the partially restored Flight of Five on full display this year. Also, there will be two contests: a coloring contest for children and a competition to reenact a photo of real-life lock tenders from the 19th century.
“As we approach autumn, Locktoberfest is a perfect way to celebrate the season of mist over America’s most influential waterway, crisp air, brilliant foliage, and a plentiful harvest across the quaint communities nestled along the banks of the Erie Canal,” said Canal Corp. Director Brian U. Stratton said.
In addition to the Community Market from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., a ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 10 a.m., entertainment will take place on the main stage from noon to 5, children’s activities will take place from 9:30 to noon, and the official Erie Canal mascot, Sal the Mule, will be on hand from 9 to 3.
