Dr. Sonia M. Malfa, pediatrician, traveler

A Mass of Christian Burial for Dr. Sonia M. Malfa, a pediatrician, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in Nativity of Our Lord Parish, 26 Thorn Ave., Orchard Park. Burial will be in Nativity of Our Lord Cemetery, Orchard Park.

Dr. Malfa, 78, of Orchard Park, died Sept. 4, at Mercy Hospital after a short illness.

She was born in San Sebastian, Puerto Rico, the daughter of the late Felino and Clemencia Cortes. She moved to Buffalo in 1961 for her medical residency at Mercy Hospital and a pediatric cardiology residency at Women & Children’s Hospital.

She was a pediatrician in private practice since 1973 in West Seneca and South Buffalo for three generations of patients. She also was an attending physician at Mercy and Women & Children’s hospitals.

Dr. Malfa graduated cum laude from the Polytechnic Institute of Puerto Rico in 1957 and the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine in 1961. She was among the first women to become a doctor through the medical school in Puerto Rico.

She was a member of Nativity of Our Lord Parish.

Dr. Malfa enjoyed international travel. Her trips included visits to Thailand, Dubai and Aruba. She also enjoyed reading, especially biographies, and hiking in Chestnut Ridge Park.

She was married to the late Dr. John Malfa, who died in 2013.

Survivors include two daughters, Lisa and Sonia; two sons, John and Robert; a sister, Mirta Feliciano; and two grandchildren.
