Student rescued from gorge

NIAGARA FALLS – A 19-year-old Niagara University student was rescued Sunday after falling 30 to 40 feet into the Niagara River gorge.

Officer Patrick Moriarity of the New York State Parks Police, who is assigned to the lower gorge, said he heard a woman yelling for help at about 12:30 p.m. The student, whose identity was not released Sunday, had fallen off the Niagara gorge trail and suffered head and back injuries.

The Niagara Falls Police Department responded to the scene and placed the woman in a rescue basket to carry her out of the gorge. She was taken to Erie County Medical Center for treatment.
