Letter: Innocent lives lost in mass shootings

Innocent lives lost in mass shootings

In response to the grieving father of the slain TV newswoman who asked how many more innocent lives will be lost in mass shootings: As many as it takes to provide victims as collateral damage and unsung heroes in the effort to allow maximum access to firearms. Freedom isn’t free, you know.

As many as it takes to secure the careers of elected officials bought and bullied by gun rights’ activists. Hearings on gun safety and reductions in gun violence in other countries can’t be held in our legislative chambers.

As many as it takes to preserve our country’s exceptional statistics on gun violence. As many as it takes to satisfy extremists who consider questioning the status quo the equivalent of subjugation. Sedition is difficult without a well-armed militia.

As many as it takes to numb the sensitivities of the majority of people who otherwise recognize social pathology. The ubiquitous carnage confirms our worst views of human nature, hence nothing can be done.

If the only way to stop a sick and fearful person with a gun is for more people to become fearful and buy a gun, the number of victims is infinite.
