Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, seeking her fourth championship in the tournament and the $50,000 top prize, took the No. 2 spot behind Shannon O’Keefe for Sunday’s stepladder finals of the Bowlmor AMF U.S. Women’s Open championship at the Brunswick Zone Carolier in North Brunswick, N.J.
Johnson was leading the qualifying before she went 3-5 in the final round of match play while O’Keefe was going 7-1, wiping out Liz’s seemingly safe 254-point lead.
Johnson was in third place before she shot into the lead with a blistering 1,857 total pinfall (232.125 average) in her final eight-game qualifying block on Friday. That was 106 pins better than the next best score. She solidified her advantage by going 7-1 in the first-round of match play Friday night after the field had been cut to 24 and was 5-3 in the second round of match play on Saturday.
The five-bowler stepladder finals will be shown live on CBS Sports Network at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
