LOCKPORT – The Niagara County Health Department and Office for the Aging will offer two diabetes-related classes this month.
A six-week program for people who already have diabetes will begin Sept. 17 at the Dale Association, 33 Ontario St., Lockport, and continue for six consecutive Thursdays from 1 to 3:30 p.m. The workshop is designed to help patients improve food choices, increase physical activity and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
A 16-week program for those whose doctors have told them they are at risk for diabetes will begin Sept. 18 in Wheatfield Towers, 6849 Plaza Drive, Wheatfield. It will be held on Fridays from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. The program will instruct participants in skills they need to lose a modest amount of weight, become more physically active and avoid stress. Many pre-diabetics will develop the disease within three years if they don’t do something to prevent it, the Health Department said.
Registration for either course is available by calling the Health Department’s Nursing Division at 278-1900.
