Sheriff’s deputies beefing up patrols for Labor Day weekend

The Erie County Sheriff’s Department will be beefing up patrols on area highways and waterways on the Labor Day weekend.

The road and marine patrols will be looking for reckless operation and issuing tickets for speeding, operating while intoxicated, seat belt violations, distracted driving and other violations, the Sheriff’s Department said Friday.

There are also dedicated DWI patrols under the roving “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” program paid for with grant funding.

On Labor Day weekend last year, sheriff’s deputies responded to 164 separate DWI and vehicle and traffic violations, while the marine unit responded to 19 incidents, including one boating while intoxicated situation and one water rescue, the department said.
