High School Extra (Sept. 4): Niagara Catholic edges Nichols soccer in double overtime

Niagara Catholic wins

Tom Hamilton’s game-winning goal off a penalty kick gave Niagara Catholic a 3-2 double-overtime victory over Nichols in Monsignor Martin action on Thursday. Hamilton had two goals in the Patriots’ first game of the season.

Jordan Gregoire’s game-winning goal and Jared Breeden’s shutout helped give Eden a 1-0 victory over North Collins in non-league play.

In other non-leaguers, Ali Shawish had two goals, including the game winner in overtime, to give Lackawanna a 4-3 victory over Frontier. Evan Scales scored the game’s lone goal about 10 minutes into the match to give St. Joe’s a 1-0 victory over Aquinas. Trevor Lewandowski’s three goals led Holland to a 4-2 victory over Cheektowaga.

In the Niagara Frontier League, Lew-Port defeated Kenmore West, 2-1, behind goals by Kyle McGlynn and Nick Heffler. Josh Pearson made 11 saves. Matt Belardi had three goals in Niagara Wheatfield’s 11-0 victory over North Tonawanda. Dylan Cunningham scored twice in Kenmore East’s 4-1 victory over Niagara Falls. Joe Kulikowski and Garrett Robinson each had two goals in Grand Island’s 4-0 victory over Lockport in ECIC II. In the CCAA West, Jackson Rybicki had two goals and Lucas Pryzgodski recorded the shutout to give Southwestern a 3-0 victory over Falconer.

Birzon leads Will East

Marissa Birzon had two goals and one assist in Williamsville East’s 4-1 victory over West Seneca East in ECIC II girls soccer.

In the Monsignor Martin, Marina Campbell had four goals in Niagara Catholic’s 9-0 victory over Park. Tristyn Puzan and Sam Campbell added two goals each. Tahelah Noel scored both goals in Christian Central’s 2-1 victory over St. Mary’s/Lancaster.

Emma Lindke scored both goals in Roy-Hart’s 2-0 victory over Holley in the Holley Tournament.

OP wins a thriller

Orchard Park rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Clarence, 24-26, 25-23, 19-25, 25-13, 25-23 in five sets in ECIC I volleyball. Jason Manley had 32 kills and nine kills as Spencer Eagleton added 50 assists and five aces for OP.

CCAA sweeps

In CCAA Central play, North Collins swept Silver Creek, 25-17, 25-10, 25-9, led by Jasmine Filkov’s eight kills and five aces. Also, Southwestern swept Pine Valley, 25-7, 25-8, 25-11, led by Sally Rudny’s 13 kills and five aces.

Williamsville North defeated Grand Island, 21-25, 25-23, 25-24, 25-17, led by Elise Hopkins’ 18 kills and 12 digs.

Pioneer prevails

Lauren Vacinek’s game-winning goal in extra time gave Pioneer a 1-0 victory over Williamsville South in an early season Class B and ECIC field hockey showdown.

The goal came in extra time because a game can’t end on a penalty corner. Kelsey Chai found Vacinek for the game’s lone goal on the final play.

“They were just taking it to them and hoping one would go in,” said head coach Jana Landahl. ... “It showed a lot of determination.”

Heather Cummings’ game-winning overtime goal off a pass from Sarah Schultz gave Akron a 1-0 victory. The goal came less than three minutes into overtime in Niagara-Orleans competition. Madison Krzykowski had nine saves to record the shutout.

Penny Leonard had two goals and an assist in OP’s 4-0 win over West Seneca East. Jessie Gacek had eight saves.
