Erie County sets event to drop off unneeded prescription drugs

Erie County will hold a drop-off event for prescription drugs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 26 at 13 different sites around the county.

The free event, sponsored by the county Department of Environment and Planning, Covanta Energy and other partners, will allow residents to discard unwanted and expired prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, syringes, inhalers, ointments, liquids and patches.

“Storing any type of expired or unneeded medication in the home increases the risk of accidental poisoning or theft, and it’s important to protect our water supply by not flushing medications down the drain to dispose of them,” said County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz.

Residents may visit the county website at http://www2.erie.gov/environment/ for the location of the nearest drop-off site.
