Young bicyclist killed in collision on Hewitt Avenue was 8, not 7, police say

The young bicyclist who was fatally injured in a collision with a car in the 100 block of Hewitt Avenue at about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday was 8, and not 7, as police first reported. His identity has not been released.

An autopsy performed at the Erie County Medical Examiner’s office Thursday found he died of “blunt force trauma to the head,” said Mike DeGeorge, Buffalo Police spokesman, on Thursday.

No charges have been lodged against the car driver, but the investigation of the fatal incident is continuing, DeGeorge said.

Police do not know if the boy was wearing a helmet when struck or if he suffered the fatal injury after he was knocked off his bicycle.
