Vanessa Williams to sing national anthem for Bills/Patriots

Buffalo native Vanessa Williams will sing the national anthem for the Buffalo Bills' Sept. 20 game against the New England Patriots.

The actress/singer/former Miss America has a long-held passion for Buffalo: Her mother, Helen Tinch Williams, grew up here, and she still has family in the area. On top of that, she and her new husband, Jim Skrip of Depew, held their wedding here in July.

“It’s definitely a very deep Buffalo story between Jim and I,” she told The News' Tim O'Shei in July.

September won't be Williams' first go at the anthem, nor even her biggest sports-related performance: She sang the anthem at the Super Bowl in 1996 and, only this week, sang it at the start of the U.S. Open.

Closer to home, Williams, a Syracuse University graduate, did the honors at a Syracuse-Duke game in February 2014.
