A mural takes shape in Lockport

A gargantuan mural honoring the history of Lockport and the Erie Canal is underway on the side of a building at 51 Main St. in Lockport.

It's the latest project by Augustina Droze and Bruce Adams, the busy team of muralists responsible for the transformation of 95 Perry St. into a multicolored tribute to the Cobblestone District and the fantasia of neighborhood landmarks and characters on the side of Jim's Steakout in the Elmwood Village.

Organizers have been documenting the project with photos and videos on the "Mural on Main Lockport" Facebook page. A video of the progress so far is here.

"The mission of Mural on Main is simple," according to the project website. "The city recently completed the removal of a broken down parking ramp. This resulted in a large empty wall on the side of an adjacent building. It seemed obvious that this wall was a perfect canvas to paint a mural. A mural which could express the passion which proud Lockportians hold for their historic city."
