Water Street Landing offers sophistication without pretense

Follow Center Street in Lewiston until you hit water, then hang a left to Water Street Landing. Some might remember it as the site of the Riverside Inn. Even further back it was the Angler’s Retreat, a hotel for fishermen.

While casting for trout may not be in your wheelhouse, make reeling in a great warm-weather experience a priority even as summer fades (officially ending Sept. 23); especially if you’ve made the trek to tour Old Fort Niagara or take in the last Artpark concerts (J. Geils Band on Sept. 8, the Avett Brothers on Sept. 19 and Alabama Shakes on Sept. 22).

As long as the weather cooperates, the patio remains open at Water Street, which offers its music on Mondays for Clam Slam/Wing Night and Wednesdays with Dave Thurman and open mic night. Now that football has fired up, Water Street will host its own version of a tailgate party on Sundays (no seat cushion required).

For those who want to dine in style after cocktails, Water Street provides an upscale menu in its chic indoor dining space. For a more casual meal, The Patio (weather permitting) is a space that offers a menu with the best kind of warm weather fare, including burgers and wraps.

When the weather doesn’t cooperate, the River Sidebar offers just as much fun, but with protection. Here you can enjoy the foods of summer in a cozy setting, like Clams Casino, Island Mussels in a Black Pepper Coconut Rum Butter Sauce, taco sliders, build-your-own-quesadilla and more.

The best thing about Water Street is it manages to be sophisticated without pretension. In other words, you can hang out and have a few laughs without feeling out of place. Plus it’s always fun to watch boats navigating the river, or catch the Whirlpool Jet Boat folks coming and going.

Then there are the sunsets. Despite being on the river, the view is just as wonderful as those on the lake. And with the short Western New York summer, we’ll take all the sunsets we can get.
