North Tonawanda man charged with reckless driving endangering a state crew

A 44-year-old North Tonawanda man was arrested about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday for reckless driving that sent a pregnant driver to a hospital for a checkup and endangered a State Department of Transportation street crew on Twin City Memorial Highway at Lufkin Drive in the City of Tonawanda, police said.

Salvatore Capella of Division Street, North Tonawanda, was charged with imprudent speed, speeding in a work zone, unsafe lane changes, driving on the shoulder of the road and improper passing as he sped along Twin City Memorial Highway and struck a state DOT arrow sign truck at the intersection with Lufkin Drive.

After striking the DOT truck Capella swerved into a car being driven by Titania Ivanov, 22, a 2-month pregnant North Tonawanda woman who was taken by ambulance to Women and Children’s Hospital in Buffalo for a precautionary medical checkup, according to Capt. Fredric Foels of the City of Tonawanda Police.

Capella told police he had been in a hurry to get home so his wife could use his vehicle to get to work. Foels said none of six DOT workers at the scene was injured but witnesses told officers that Capella was recklessly passing other vehicles on the right and driving on the shoulder of the road before he rear-ended the DOT truck whose crew had been setting up a lane closure to do guard rail repairs. Capella will face court sessions in coming days, the captain said.
