Albert E. Payne, veteran, Westinghouse designer

Albert E. Payne, a World War II veteran and retired designer for Bell Aircraft and Westinghouse Electric, died Tuesday at his home in Clarence. He was 91.

Mr. Payne was born and raised in Buffalo, where he graduated from high school. He was drafted in the Army during World War II, when he fought in the Ardennes, Northern France and Rhineland campaigns. He was awarded three Bronze Star medals, a European campaign medal of merit and the French Campaign Victory Medal. Mr. Payne was discharged from the Army after attending the University of Bern in Switzerland.

Mr. Payne worked as a designer at Bell for five years before spending 38 years at Westinghouse. He retired in the early 1980s.

After retiring, Mr. Payne devoted a lot of his time to helping underprivileged senior citizens. He also enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Europe.

Mr. Payne is survived by his wife of 64 years, the former Barbara A. Niess.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Friday in Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, 4375 Harris Hill Road in Clarence.
