VegFest celebrates plant-based lifestyle

If you think training on a meatless diet makes you weak, perhaps you should check out the Western New York VegFest’s Tofurky 5K, where plant-based runners compete for a soybean-based reward at the finish line.

All right, everyone gets vegan snacks at the finish line of the race, which is described as a race/walk, not a hard-core competition, and “the largest Tofurky Trot in the country.” It’s all part of Western New York’s second annual celebration of plant-based lifestyles from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday centered around Delaware Park’s Marcy Casino.

The free event is a daylong collection of speakers on vegan and vegetarian topics, including cooking demonstrations, and entertainment. Restaurants and other vendors will line up to pitch to an audience estimated at 5,000 last year.

Local vendors include Allentown Pizza, Amy’s Truck (with veggie “wet shoes” chili fries), Buffalo Plant Burger (vegan mac and cheese, seitan ribs, collard greens), Dosa Place (Western New York’s only purely vegetarian restaurant) and GGs Franks (vegan hot dogs and toppings),

Also: Go Veggies (vegetable and mushroom patties), Merge (seitan wings and vegan ice cream sandwiches), Natalie’s Mediterranean (falafel, hummus and tabouli), Sweetly Simple Bakery, Taste of India, Taste of Siam, Whole Hog Food Truck, and Wheatberry Bake Shop, plus vendors of fermented cashew butter, vegan ice pops and more.

Registration is required for the 5K race, benefiting Niagara County’s Asha Farm Sanctuary, and nonperishable vegan food donations will be collected for Food Not Bombs.
