Gun in Lockport robbery tied to Clarence theft

A handgun gun recently brandished in a Lockport robbery was stolen from a Clarence home safe, resulting in additional charges against the accused robber, authorities said Monday.

Gregory Longwell, 35, of Cheektowaga, already was facing charges in connection with a July 16 armed robbery in the Town of Lockport, during which the victim grabbed the handgun and Longwell’s car keys. He was arrested hours afterward.

Meanwhile, the Erie County Sheriff’s Office was investigating the theft of cash and a .25-caliber pistol from a home safe in Clarence, a sheriff’s spokesman said Monday. The make, model and serial number of the gun used in the Lockport robbery matched that of the stolen weapon, resulting in additional charges of grand and petit larceny against Longwell.

Longwell remains in custody in the Niagara County Jail.
