Haubeil commits to Ohio State

He has yet to line up for a kick in a real game with his new team, but that hasn’t stopped junior-to-be Blake Haubeil from picking his next one.

Haubeil, the second team All-Western New York kicker and honorable mention all-state pick who recently transferred from Amherst to Canisius, has verbally committed to Ohio State as part of the defending national champions’ 2017 recruiting class.

Haubeil made his announcement shortly after taking part in Ohio State’s marquee recruiting camp, Friday Night Lights.

Haubeil went 7 for 9 on field-goal attempts last year as a sophomore, with a season-long make of 49 yards. He recorded a touchback on 65 percent of his kickoffs.

He is expected to take over the Crusaders’ kicking job for graduated All-WNY first teamer and USA Today second team All-American Michael Tarbutt, who will start at Connecticut this season.

Should Haubeil’s verbal commitment turn into a written one when he’s allowed to sign his letter of intent as a senior, that means Canisius will have graduated two players in a three-year span to programs in the Big Ten. News Player of the Year TJ Wheatley enters his freshman year at Michigan.
