Thief who used foil-lined bag sentenced to six months in jail

A woman who stole more than $1,000 worth of jackets from Cabela’s, by placing them in a foil-lined bag she had brought in the store, was sentenced Friday to six months in jail, Cheektowaga police reported.

Mayia Marks, 19, of Buffalo was arrested by town police last Nov. 4 after the shoplifting incident at the Walden Avenue outdoor sports store. When taken into custody, she also had clothing stolen from another store, police said.

Foil-lined bags, known as “booster bags,” are used in attempts to thwart merchandise security systems.

Originally charged with a felony count of grand larceny, as well as possession of burglar’s tools and possession of stolen property, Marks pleaded to a misdemeanor count of petit larceny and was sentenced Friday by Town Justice Paul Piotrowski.
