Cheektowaga man gets jail sentence stemming from March crash

A Cheektowaga resident who fled the scene of an injury accident this past March was sentenced Friday to five months in jail.

Town police said Scott M. Nowak, 35, had run a red light while driving on Genesee Street on March 8, causing an accident. Nowak got out of his car and ran; he was caught by officers a short distance away.

A hypodermic needle and heroin were found in his car, police said. He was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, aggravated unlicensed operation – he was driving on a suspended license, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident and numerous, unspecified vehicle and traffic violations.

Nowak, who pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of a personal injury accident and driving with a suspended license, was sentenced Friday by Town Justice Paul Piotrowski.
