Kayaker rescued after vessel swamped on Lake Erie

MAYVILLE – A 33-year-old Niagara County resident was rescued from Lake Erie after a wave overturned his kayak and threw him into the water, sheriff’s deputies reported Tuesday.

Mark R. Gerlach, of Sanborn, was able to call 911 for help shortly before 9:30 p.m. Monday as he clung to the kayak to keep afloat off Lake Erie State Park, deputies said. He gave his approximate location to dispatchers, and members of the sheriff’s marine unit reached him a short time later.

Gerlach was treated for mild hypothermia, deputies said, and was issued a summons for failure to have a life jacket.

Deputies were assisted by firefighters from Dunkirk and Westfield, as well as members of the Dunkirk Dive Team.
