Helen D. Hoelzl, teacher of catechism, Eucharistic minister

Jan. 15, 1931 – July 8, 2015

Helen D. Hoelzl, who was honored by the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo for teaching the catechism, died July 8 in her Orchard Park home after a yearlong battle with cancer. She was 84.

The former Helen Knavel was born in Buffalo. She attended Gardenville High School, and earned a basic catechist certificate at Villa Maria College.

She was employed by JC Penney at McKinley Mall and in the store’s custom decorating department as a drapery maker.

She received the Outstanding Catechist Award from the diocese for years of teaching at St. Phillip the Apostle Parish in Cheektowaga. She also served as a Eucharistic minister for many years at St. Agnes Parish in Buffalo.

Ms. Hoelzl enjoyed crafts, and was accomplished at knitting and crocheting, as well as painting and other handcrafts. She is survived by three sons, Robert J., David and Ronald C.; and a daughter, Carol Ann Fredericks.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 2950 Southwestern Blvd., Orchard Park.
