Historic Lockport locks to operate Saturday

LOCKPORT – A volunteer team of lock tenders led by Tim Rushlow of Trek Inc., will operate the restored Flight of Five Erie Canal locks in Lockport from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Each team consists of six volunteers, who open valves to fill the 19th century locks with water, manually open the five-ton wooden lock gates using wooden balance beams, and empty the water that originated in Lake Erie into the canal basin below. Simultaneously, one lock tender operates the mechanized Erie Barge Canal Locks 34 and 35, adjacent to the Flight of Five, for canal recreational boaters and sight seers.

The manually operated lock gates have been installed on Erie Canal Locks 69 and 70 in the first phase of the restoration of the Flight of Five. Also, the Erie Canal Discovery Center, 24 Church St., is open daily, and the Lockport Community Market on Canal Street above the locks is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The lock demonstrations and community market operate every Saturday through the end of September.
