St. Bonaventure University announced two-year contract extensions for men’s basketball coach Mark Schmidt and women’s basketball coach Jim Crowley on Thursday. Both coaches are now under contract through the 2020-21 season.
“Mark and Jim are two of the best coaches in the Atlantic 10 Conference,” said Tim Kenney, Bona director of athletics. "Both of our programs are positioned for long-term, consistent success, and that is a direct tribute to Mark and Jim. These extensions demonstrate the University’s commitment to them and to our basketball programs, and I could not be happier about that.”
Schmidt’s teams have had winning records five of the last seven years. Last year, the Bonnies went 18-13 overall and 10-8 in the Atlantic 10 Conference – the second-most A-10 wins in the program’s history. The highlights of the year included wins at eventual conference champion Davidson and at home over 18th-ranked VCU. Two Bonnies, senior center Youssou Ndoye and junior guard Marcus Posley, were named third team all-conference.
In 2012, Schmidt received a contract extension after he led the Bonnies to the program’s first Atlantic 10 championship and an NCAA Tournament berth. Over his eight seasons at St. Bonaventure, Schmidt’s record is 124-123.
Schmidt receives widespread respect among his peers given the fact Bona, at about 2,300 students, is so much smaller than its top A10 competitors and he took over a downtrodden program. St. Bonaventure has also made significant academic progress during Schmidt’s tenure. The Bonnies earned a Public Recognition Award from the NCAA this spring, ranking in the top 10 percent of all men’s basketball programs in the Academic Progress Rate measurement with a perfect score of 1,000.
Crowley just completed his 15th season as St. Bonaventure’s head coach. His record is 234-225, although over the last seven seasons the Bonnies averaged 21 wins per year.
Crowley led St. Bonaventure to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament in 2012, earning ESPN National Coach of the Year and Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year honors. He was again named the A-10 Coach of the Year in 2013-14 after the Bonnies finished second in the conference and won 24 games overall. St. Bonaventure earned WNIT berths in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2014.
The Bonnies have been equally as successful in the classroom during Crowley's tenure. They made the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Top 25 Academic Honor Roll again this season - the fourth time in eight years the program earned that rank.
Kenney took over as new Bona AD in March.
