Sheriff warns about ATM skimming devices

The Erie County Sheriff’s Office reports that it has received information about debit and credit card skimming devices possibly being placed on machines in Erie County.

The sheriff’s office warns citizens who use their debit or credit card to withdraw money or to make a purchase to closely examine the area around the card reader slot for any suspicious, extra or unusual device.

Businesses with ATM machines also are encouraged to examine any machine placed on the property or with the establishment for card skimming devices.

If a business owner or ATM customer discovers or suspects something unusual, they are advised not to use the machine and are encouraged to call the sheriff’s office at 858-2903 or the local police department.

People also are encouraged to monitor their accounts for any suspicious or unauthorized transactions.

No card-skimming devices have been found on machines in Erie County, contrary to a statement issued Tuesday.
