Perhaps it's time to change the name of Western New York's signature summer event from the Erie County Fair to the Erie County Food.
Fair organizers have announced that 20 new menu items to this year's offerings for the event that runs Aug. 12 to 23. They include:
Deep Fried Chicken Wing Dip, an invention of Diventuri Concessions, which utilizes Frank’s Red Hot sauce, chicken, cream cheese wrapped in a shell and deep fried until golden brown.
Chorizo Ciabatta from Buffalo's Mineo & Sapio. It’s a zesty chorizo patty, with dill pickles, sliced tomatoes, pickled red onion, Asian slaw, Chipotle creolaise served on a grilled ciabatta roll.
Hickory Smoked Bison Sandwiches will be sold by the Maple Ridge Bison Ranch of Hinsdale, New York.
Stuffed Texas Toast from Chiavetta's Catering Service. It features slow smoked roasted pork, in between 2 slices of cheddar cheese, garnished with fresh sliced sweet onions in a sweet pickle sauce, in between two slices of Texas Toast and toasted over charcoal.
Dave Perri, owner of Pizza Amore’ from Grand Island, will debut a Deep Fried Pizza Cone. The concoction includes traditional pizza ingredients inside a deep fried dough cone for an easy grab and go Fair experience.
Chicken Shawarma from Egyptian restaurateur Jack Adly, owner of Venus in Amherst. The dish features chicken, rice, and a homemade garlic sauce.
The Bacon Funnel Cake on a Stick, from Taylor’s Doughboy, a strip of bacon on a stick dipped into funnel cake batter, fried, and topped with homemade maple icing and powder sugar.
Also this year, Nick Charlap’s Ice Cream of Boston will be back with hand-crafted ice cream. Charlap’s will feature its Cotton Candy flavor that utilizes locally sourced dairy products.
The “Taste of the Fair” Food Festival will return for a second year and is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 20. Fair vendors will feature nearly 100 “taste” sized portions for $2. Alongside traditional Fair foods like Italian sausage and cotton candy, the Taste of the Fair’s menu includes Buffalo Mac & Cheese Pizza, Deep Fried Strawberries & Cream Puff and Beef on Weck Egg Rolls.
A complete listing of menu items and locations will be available on the Fair’s website, mobile app and on menus located at Fair gates the day of the event.
New for 2015, Fair fans will be able to vote for the “Best New Food at the Fair” in the “New Food Showdown." After trying some of the new dishes, the public will be able to cast their vote on the Fairgrounds mobile app. Voting will begin opening day Aug. 12 and continue to Aug. 18. The winner will be announced Aug. 20.
