BALTES, Warren "Rick"

BALTES - Warren "Rick" March 9, 1948 - September 7, 2013. The following obituary was written by Warren/Rick himself. Who knows you better than you? Warren R. Baltes, Author and 2 war Veteran of West Amherst, died on September 7, 2013 at the age of 65. A Western New York native, he spent most of his life in Government service. He graduated from South Park High School in 1966, and received a degree from Long Island Tech in 1968. Returning to Buffalo, he was Engineer and on-air personality at WNIA-AM until drafted by the US Army. He served with the first infantry division, and later in Europe with Army Intelligence. After his discharge, he graduated from Buffalo State University in 1975. Continuing his military service, for many years he was a Sergeant in the NY National Guard. During that time, he was ordered to active duty for Operation Desert Storm. Additionally, while stationed at the Connecticut Street Armory, he authored two books about the Armory and its' units, becoming the Historian of the Armory. For decades, he regularly gave tours to many civic, school and veterans groups. Mr. Baltes "Contributed to and / or appeared in two documentaries about famous former members from his armory, General William J Donovan and Father Nelson Baker. He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal and two awards of the National Defense Service Medal; as well as many state decorations. The Veteran Garden at Oakwood Cemetery was re-dedicated to him. The plaque was installed in his honor on August 9, 2014. Mr. Baltes was a member of Phi Alpha Theta (Collegiate History Fraternity), The OSS Society (CIA), American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, 74th / 174th Veterans Association, and a former director of the Erie County Judges and Police Conference. e is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife, Kathleen, of 40 years; his son Warren Brent, his daughter Korrine(Mike) and his granddaughter Autumn. Also surviving are brothers, Donald J, James G, and David W, as well as a sister, Lori Ann. Interment will take place at 10 AM on Friday, July 17, 2015 at Mount Olivet Cemetery, 4000 Elmwood Ave, Kenmore NY 14217. Lunch immediately following at Crazy Jake's, 26 Webster St., N. Tonawanda, NY 14120.
