Pride Path: A day at the ballpark, Darien Lake

Out At The Ballpark, 5 p.m. July 16 at Coca-Cola Field (One James D. Griffin Plaza)

When the Buffalo Bisons take on the Columbus Clippers this week, it’s going to be a gay ol’ time. The Bisons are the first professional sports team in Western New York to raise the rainbow flag and make the local LGBT community its special guest.

You’ll notice the difference — from the music and trivia you hear between plays to the dugout drag show during the seventh-inning stretch.

The national anthem will be led by Marc Sacco, winner of the 2008 Artvoice Theatre Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Musical; and the first pitch will be thrown by Don Pinke, one of the founders of Queen City Softball League.

The pregame party starts at 5 p.m. at Centerfield Pavilion and goes until the game starts. Reserved tickets are $12 and must be purchased from Rob Kates by calling 846-2032 or emailing

18th Annual Gay Day at Darien Lake, 2 to 11 p.m. July 20 at Darien Lake (9993 Allegheny Road, Darien)

It started as a Club Marcella employee get-together, and now it’s an annual community staple attended by hundreds, some of whom would call it their favorite day of the year.

Spend the afternoon in the Darien Lake park pavilion with an all-access pass to the beer kiosk, a summer barbecue and one of your rare chances to catch an outdoor drag show, hosted by Imperial Court Empress 25 of Buffalo Jayme Cadelle Coxx.

After the show, watch from a picnic table as your favorite queens conquer the Ride of Steel in full face. Don’t miss Ignite the Night after the rides close at 10 p.m., where chances are that show technicians will give a special shout-out to the LGBT community during the laser light show.

Tickets are $45, including parking, park admission and lunch, beer and soda, or $25 for access to pavilion amenities only. Purchase tickets at Cathode Ray (26 Allen St.), Club Marcella (622 Main St.), Funky Monkey (20 Allen St.), Q (44 Allen St.) or Underground (274 Delaware Ave.).
