Joseph Ciesla, leading State Farm insurance agent

May 31, 1930 – July 10, 2015

Joseph Ciesla, a longtime leading agent for State Farm insurance, died Friday in Hospice Buffalo, Cheektowaga. He was 85.

Born in Buffalo, Mr. Ciesla graduated from Hutchinson-Central High School. In 1948, he enlisted in the Army and served in the Sixth Medium Tank Battalion, rising to the rank of private first class. Afterward, he served in the National Guard until 1954, rising to the rank of master sergeant.

Mr. Ciesla worked for several insurance companies, eventually becoming a lead agent with State Farm for more than 30 years. He helped establish company offices in Buffalo and Depew.

Mr. Ciesla was a 50-year member of the YMCA and an avid handball player. He spent weekends at his cabin in Springville, where he enjoyed snowmobiling, four-wheeling, hiking and maintaining the property with farming equipment.

Survivors include his wife, the former Florence Bukowski; two sisters, Lydia McLeod and Genevieve Whitefield; one brother, Leon; two sons, Joseph Jr. and Mark; and two grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, 10950 Main St., Clarence. Prayers will be said at 9:15 in Amigone Funeral Home, Inc., 8440 Main St., Clarence.
