Letter: Why were murderers given special privileges?

Why were murderers given special privileges?

I was aghast while reading in The News that the escaped prisoners had “cooking privileges.” What? These two were convicted murderers. Why were they allowed to cook in their cell block? Guards allowed them access to the crawl space behind the cell to wire an electrical connection so they could better cook! Blades and tools were hidden inside frozen meat. Who exactly is running this Club Med?

It is outrageous that prison is so “cushy.” How about hard time and diminished free time? How about we actually punish felons and not treat them better than many who live in the free world? Perhaps the governor should also explain how this was the correct treatment for prisoners.
