Drowning victim identified as Youngstown grandfather

PORTER – A man who drowned Saturday evening while riding a personal watercraft with his grandson was identified Sunday as John H. Rogers, 76, of Youngstown.

Rogers died after falling from the craft about 150 yards from shore on Lake Ontario about 7 p.m., Niagara County sheriff’s deputies said. Deputies and others attempted CPR, but Rogers was pronounced dead after being taken to Mount St. Mary’s Hospital in Lewiston.

Rogers fell from the watercraft while it was stationary but was unable to get back onboard, even with the help of his grandson, who went for help, deputies said.

An investigation by the Niagara County Criminal Investigation Bureau and Niagara County Marine Division continues.
