NORTH TONAWANDA – The state Department of Environmental Conservation announced this week it has deleted the former Schreck’s Scrapyard on Schenck Street in North Tonawanda from its list of inactive hazardous waste sites.
Contaminated soil and buried drums on the site were removed, and buildings on the property were demolished. The DEC report said elevated levels of some heavy metals are still present, so the agency is ordering that future use of the land be limited to commercial or industrial projects. Also, use of untreated groundwater from the site will not be permitted.
The site was dropped from the list Monday after a public comment period expired at the end of May.
