Deputies arrest woman seen burglarizing Castile apartment

WARSAW – The woman seen removing items from a Village of Castile apartment told Wyoming County sheriff’s deputies she thought the apartment was vacant and the property abandoned.

Then the homeowners came home.

Shawna M. Crandall, 29, of North Main Street, was charged with a felony count of burglary and a misdemeanor count of grand larceny. She appeared in court Monday.

Deputies investigated a report last Wednesday about a woman repeatedly entering an unoccupied residence on Washington Street and removing property. She wasn’t there when deputies arrived, but the person who called police told them where she lives.

Meanwhile, the homeowners showed up and said several items were missing.

When deputies went to Crandall’s home, she reportedly told them she thought the apartment was vacant and that the owner left the items behind. Deputies said she admitted taking a game system and a computer tablet, and retrieved those items from her apartment.

Several other stolen items haven’t been recovered, said deputies, who are continuing their investigation.
